Tell us about the images you captured.

I wanted to capture the vastness of the snowy landscape. In the village, I aimed to capture the way people live in a snowy city and the small moments of their everyday lives.

What was your experience like with your camera gear?

When I was in a village called "Biei,” snow was pouring down so heavily. Despite the challenging conditions, I managed to consider the focal length and capture the shots. Even if the subject was far away and difficult to reach, I used the crop mode to capture the shot. This allowed me to cover up to 70mm, which was great. Since the houses in the village were designed higher than eye level, shooting with a wide-angle lens would have resulted in distortion when trying to capture the entire scene. However, at 20mm, I was able to avoid distortion.

What should fellow photographers look out for in winter?

I recommend trying slightly overexposed settings. Snow tends to appear darker than expected, so overexposure is often used to capture the bright feeling that snow gives. Also, since it's travel photography, I recommend capturing shots from various angles. With the swivel LCD monitor, you can shoot from eye level, as well as low or high angles, which is crucial for ensuring the diversity of your photos.

How did your equipment help you capture beautiful moments?

A wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing fleeting moments. You get to capture a scene and appreciate more of it in a wider frame. At its widest the FE 20-70mm F4 G lens is great for shooting tall buildings.

Where would you recommend fellow photographers to go in New York?

If you're visiting for the first time, I recommend strolling vertically through Manhattan. You can start from Lower Manhattan and walk all the way to Greenwich Village. You can also walk from Times Square to Central Park. I recommend early morning hours when there are fewer people.

What were your most memorable moments in New York?

On the last day of my trip at Central Park, the autumn colours of the maple leaves were beautifully coloured. The sunset made it even better.

How does your equipment help you capture your travels?

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens is a companion for all travels. Those who have used it can feel how lightweight and compact it is, which allows for prolonged focus during photography and adds to the satisfaction of shooting. When I viewed the images on a large monitor, the landscapes were captured with sharp resolution from the centre to the edges.

What are your tips for capturing great photos in India?

First of all, always have your camera with you and turned on, so you can react quickly when the moment comes. It's a busy city with lots of people, cars and motorcycles moving fast, so you need a camera with a fast shutter speed like the Alpha 1 to capture the moment. I tend to set it to 1/500 second or faster when shooting on the streets. Autofocus is also important, that’s why the combination of FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II with Alpha 1 was so good that I never missed a shot.

What are the most important things to watch out for when photographing in India?

Theft is the biggest thing to watch out for when travelling. There are so many people, cars, and motorcycles, so it's easy to get stolen from while you're distracted for a moment. So I was constantly aware of my surroundings while shooting. I always prioritised safety by carrying my camera around my waist with a hook or small bag in front of me. Cameras are expensive, and you can easily attract attention when you're shooting, so you have to be careful.

Experiment and try to get something out of the ordinary. Sometimes the best shots come from the most unexpected places.”

If you plan to travel to India too, Sung-Jin recommends visiting the Taj Mahal. “You have to see it in person to feel the magnificence of it.” And to those who aspire to travel the world and capture every wondrous moment, Sung-Jin advises to have patience and take your time with your camera.

Creative musings and inspirations

The first time I fell in love with photography was during my university days. But the love affair soon fizzled out and I almost gave up on my passion. Fortunately, at the end of 2013, my wife surprised with an anniversary gift that would change my life – it was a ticket to Varanasi, India, a location so inspiration that I fell head over heels in love with snapping photos again!

I find inspiration from travelling to new places and meeting new people. And while it's not necessarily the new locations that I take inspiration from, I do find that a change in location also often brings a new viewpoint and mindset – and that's where true inspiration comes from.

Taking to the streets with a prime lens

My favourite camera and lens pairing is the Sony Alpha 7C and the FE 35mm F1.4 GM prime lens. I find that the biggest benefit of having a prime lens with you – especially when snapping street photography – is that you can simply focus on the subject in front of you, without being concerned about changing your field of view.

It's also simple to compose shots with a prime lens, you just walk closer or further away from your subject, then snap your desired shot. And in terms of image quality, clarity and colour, prime lenses have no rivals – they beat zoom lenses in every aspect here.

Is this real life… or is this fantasy?
Shots like these are one of the main appeals of street photography to me. This shot wasn't happenstance, it's a deliberate attempt to trick audiences' eyes – and if you saw a dog riding a bike, then it's a successful optical illusion.

This shot was taken from a high angle using the Sony Alpha 7C's vari-angle LCD, the clarity of the FE 35mm F1.4 GM prime lens, and a helping of creativity.

Run wild, run free
Once again, the Sony Alpha 7C's vari-angle LCD screen comes in handy! This is a low angle shot, where I've placed my camera almost on top of the water – creating a mirror-like effect, while also playing tricks with the sizes and distances of the animals.

The FE 35mm F1.4 GM prime lens really shines here – capturing jaw dropping colours, while retaining an incredible amount of detail in both bright and dark colours. If you look closely, you should be able to read the text in the dark area of the horse's neck – that's the mark of an exceptional prime lens.

My, what long arms you have!
Typically, I seldom shoot photos like these, but I'm glad I was in the right place to capture this moment – and had the perfect equipment with me. In this scene, a young boy stands out from the landscape. And in this moment, he's throwing sand into the river – and the sand appears like an extension of his arms, giving this photo a mysterious and otherworldly feel.

The FE 35mm F1.4 GM prime lens is a star once again, as it captures both light and dark details with extraordinary clarity, which is an essential element of this shot's appeal.

I enjoy showcasing the creative side of street photography. I'm not content with simply showing life as it is, but rather, taking everyday moments and transforming them into captivating snapshots.

Creative inspirations, equipment selection

I'm fascinated with capturing emotions and expressions - especially up- close, where you almost feel like you could reach into a photo and touch the subject.I am also attracted to locations with unique lighting, as these environments inspire me to compose some of my most dramatic shots.

The versatility of a zoom lens

Zoom lenses provide a fantastic balance of shooting options - enabling you to capture everything in your environment, whether you're in tight indoor areas or wide-open spaces.

With the 24-70mm F4 ZEISS zoom lens, you can use a 24mm focal length to snap an entire scene or zoom to 70mm for a close-up on your subject's facial expressions and emotions. On this lens, I'm really surprised with the quality of the bokeh at 70mm, even at F4!

Preparing for a busy night ahead

The opportunity for this shot came up when I passed by a night market during the day and spoke with one of the vendors, who had begun her preparations early in the afternoon.

As this alley happened to be quite narrow, I had limited space to set up my shot without being intrusive. Thankfully, the form factor of my camera and lens made it easier for me to compose the shot, despite the space constraints.

Using the 24-70mm F4 ZEISS zoom lens, I could frame the shot nice and wide, while keeping distortion well-controlled. A 25mm focal length allowed me to capture more of the background, including other interesting storytelling elements.

A lifetime of fishing, told through a photo

Since he was young, this man has been taking a boat to this location and casting his net to catch fish. His favourite time for doing so happens to be a timeframe that's also perfect for a picturesque shot.

To capture this scene, I stood around 15 feet behind the fisherman to snap a clear view of the sky, his net and his boat in one photo. As the sunlight was rather strong, I was able to dial up my shutter speed to ensure the net was captured with optimal clarity as it was being cast.

Every detail of this amazing scene was captured in high quality by the Alpha 7C's full-frame sensor. At F4.0, there is a good depth of field - with ripples in the water and grass in the foreground adding a tranquil touch to the photo.

Seeking inspiration amidst the hustle and bustle

This subject is a fashion intern who was seeking inspiration amidst the hustle and bustle of the commercial centre. As this was a busy crosswalk, I had to take my shots when traffic conditions (and the traffic lights) allowed me to do so. I used the Alpha 7C's LCD screen to avoid bumping into others as I framed my shots.

I chose a 60mm perspective to further highlight the subject and was around 12 feet from her when I shot it. The photo was taken from a lower angle, which allowed me to capture the crosswalk and subject proportionally within the frame. The other people in the photo lend an added reality to the scene, with their "after-work exhaustion" telling a story of life during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The versatility of the 24-70mm F4 ZEISS zoom lens is excellent for situations with a good amount of unpredictability, like this location.

A weekend at Petaling Street

In street photography, your background can tell powerful stories.

I wanted to capture life in the city, with popular themes of cafes and fashion lining the streets. I started planned my shoot in the late-afternoon, just before it began raining. There was strong natural light and less crowds to contend with, as many had retreated to the safety of nearby malls.

As the evening started to creep up on us, the light started to dim - providing the perfect background for the shot. I shot this photo from a lower angle, and from around 6 feet away from the subject - getting a full-body shot with an equal balance between the subject, street and all the local elements in the area. Zooming to 24mm provided a wide perspective that ensured more of the environment was captured.

The captivating qualities of a prime lens

A prime lens is just a joy to use on the streets, especially the 50mm F1.8, which is especially easy to handle. This makes framing shots very intuitive and allows me to capture "in-the-moment" snapshots that really capture the mood of what was happening in that instant.

For great looking photos using a prime lens, always pay attention to the distance between you and your subject, and the all-important rule of thirds!

Standing out from the crowd

This photo of a fashion intern was snapped at a busy crosswalk along the Bukit Bintang retail area. As the shot was taken after dusk, there was a good mix of natural and artificial light - which gave the environment a cool mood.

As the dinner crowds began to form, I asked my subject to pose, while I moved around to frame the shot perfectly. Having a full-frame camera certainly made things easier. From around 6 feet away from my subject, I crouched for a lower angle shot to frame the crosswalk, sky and subject proportionately.

The creamy F1.8 bokeh gives this shot an "urban mood", while the natural 50mm perspective keeps the portrait looking natural and candid. In street portraits like this, you can combine light, colour and emotion to create some really captivating photos.

A bucket of water, and a storied life

Sometimes, random encounters can lead to powerful moments - and stories that capture the heart.

I met this man at Central Market. In this shot, he was on his way to gather water from a nearby building pipe, so he could bathe himself along the streets.

As this was a random encounter, I couldn't predict what the subject would do, or where he would go. I did realise that this street was in the shadow of a large building, so I dialled up the ISO to balance the lighting.

The shot was taken from around 12 feet in front of the man, using my FE 50mm F1.8 prime lens. We were chatting as I snapped, and he spoke candidly about his life - revealing genuine emotions. In this photo, the 50mm perspective really brings out the subject's expressions, with the depth of field highlighting the weariness he was feeling from living a hard life.

Second-hand clothes, anyone?

This unexpected encounter happened in Central Market and I saw a lady folding clothes by the sidewalk.

The street she was walking down was rather dark, I turned up the ISO and shutter speed to get a crisp image with my FE 50mm F1.8 prime lens. I also decided that a portrait shot would suit the narrow street better and did so while looking through the viewfinder.

Like the previous shot, this photo was also taken from a distance of 12 feet. If possible, it's always good to lead your subject and give them an idea of what your desired shot looks like - so they can cooperate. Here, the 50mm focal length and F1.8 depth of field creates a natural, non-distracting bokeh that enhances the storytelling element of the photo.

A fish farmer and a family legacy

This man makes a living by installing telephone wires and internet cables in rural areas. Outside of work though, you'll usually find him fishing on his boat. Fishing, he explains, is a family legacy - which explains his fondness for the activity.

For this portrait shot, I got on his boat and had to stabilise myself as much as possible. Fortunately, the camera and 50mm F1.8 lens are a lightweight combination that's easy to handle and stabilise. I took this photo approximately 3 feet from the man. The close-up shot and 50mm perspective really highlight the emotion on the subject's face - giving the shot an added sense of intimacy and believability.

When shooting staged shots like this, it's always great to create a real, heartfelt connection with your subject, so you can capture their true emotions with your camera.
